Queeley: Police netting more unlicensed drivers

By: Jermine Abel, SKNVibes.com
BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, Jan.08.18 – COMMISSIONER of Police, Ian Queeley has pointed to an increase in stop and search, and the vigilance of his officers resulting in the high number of ‘Driving without License’ offences being recorded.

The Police Force’s Public Relations Department in a recent statement highlighted, among other things, a large number of individuals who were arrested for driving without licenses and insurance.

CoP Queeley told SKNVibes that it is the diligence of those officers that is now being highlighted.

“Our officers on the road have been more vigilant, and in doing so, they are able to enforce the laws more effectively. That is why you would have seen an increase in persons driving without license.”

The police in a statement which highlighted convictions and arrest for the period December 15-23, 2017 showed at least six persons arrested for various driving offenses.

According to the report, Travis Huggins of Cayon was arrested, formally charged and cautioned for the offences of Driving Without Insurance, Driving an Unlicensed Vehicle and Driving an Unregistered Vehicle.

He was granted bail in the sum of $5,000, and is expected back in District B Magistrate Court on January 15, 2018.

The statement further disclosed that Alexander Samuel of Conaree was arrested, formally charged and cautioned for the offence of Driving Without a License and Insurance.

He was granted bail in the sum of $10,000 and is expected back at the Dieppe Bay Magistrate Court today.

CoP Queeley noted that those reports highlight that more persons are being caught through “the visibility of the police”.

“The increased visibility has helped the police in identifying those offenders,” he said.

Also going before the courts was Old Road resident, Atniel Murray, who was arrested, formally charged and cautioned for the offences of Driving Without Insurance and Driving Without a Driver's Valid and Unexpired Licence.

He was placed on $3,000 bail, while he was expected back at court last week.

Darren Moses of St. Pauls was also slapped with a charge.  According to law enforcement officers, he was charged with the offence of Driving Without Insurance and was placed on $5,000 bail.

Meanwhile, Ron Hodge was charged for the offences of Driving Without Insurance and Driving Without a Driver's Valid and expired License. He was granted bail in the sum of $5,000; while Julian Matthews of Central Thibou Avenue, was charged and cautioned for the offences of Leaving the Scene of an Accident, Driving Without License and Driving Without Insurance, was granted bail in the sum of $15,000.

The Commissioner said that it is definitely a “safety concern” for all that they are finding more people driving without licenses.

He pointed out that if someone were to be struck by an unlicensed vehicle there “would be serious issues”.
