CHARLESTOWN, Nevis – THE Miss Caribbean Culture Pageant, designed to showcase true Caribbean beauty, intellect and talent, is expected to be a spectacular event this year.

The pageant was born out of a young man’s love for such events and was first held to complement the Culturama activities. Now four years later, it has grown to be the synergy of the Culturama celebrations according to the Director of the Pageant, Randy Jeffers.

This year’s event will be held on Friday, July 24 at the Cultural Complex and a number of countries already signalled their intention to participate.

Those countries include St. Kitts, which will be represented by former National Carnival Queen Mauriece Roberts; Nevis will be represented by the reigning Culturama Queen Tanisha Hendrickson; while Anguilla will be represented by Fanny Richardson.

Antigua and Barbuda will be represented by Jamiela Joseph, Joy Joachim for Trinidad and Tobago, and Lea Scott will represent St. John’s.

St. Croix will be represented by Sheniqua Robinson, Montserrat will be represented by Loralyn Fergus, Tortola will be sending Maquita Richards, and Dominica’s Kayan Toussaint will be seeking to continue her island’s winning streak for the third consecutive year, while St. Vincent and the Grenadines will be represented by Veronique Williams.

Jeffers said that the first show held in 2006 was won by the Nevis representative, Jamilah Parris, and has since been dominated by Dominica.

“I’ve been told that the pageant is very competitive as the participants come from countries strong in culture and there is more emphasis on talent than beauty,” Jeffers said.

He said the format of the show is different from regular pageants, where the first segment would be the Interview, followed by the Talent segment.

The show will then continue with the Swimsuit, Costume and Evening Wear segments.

“It’s a show of excitement and class and has been one of the leading events for the Culturama festival,” he said.

Jeffers disclosed that the Odisi Band of Nevis and the Nu Vybes Band (the Sugar Band) of St. Kitts would be providing music at the end of the show at the same venue.

He also said that the ferries between St. Kitts and Nevis would be making special trips to accommodate those attending the show.

Mara Walters, the reigning Miss Caribbean Culture, will take her final walk on that night.
