Basseterre, St. Kitts, July 07, 2009 (SKNIS): Parliamentary Representative for Constituency #8, Honourable Cedric Liburd continued a 14-year tradition of lending a helping hand to deserving students as they prepare for the challenges of a new school.
Sixth grade graduates Trevoncia Stanley of the Deane-Glasford Primary School and Guila Stuart of Beach Allen Primary School are the recipients of the 2009 Hon. Cedric Liburd Scholarship Award which was presented during a brief ceremony today (Tuesday).
Minister Liburd congratulated the students and appealed for them to embrace the opportunities that would develop from the next stage of their growth.
“I want to wish you all the best … . You have [an excellent] foundation from this school and you need to continue to be focused and make sure that all the [educational and social] lessons you have learnt here, you will take it with you and improve upon it,” he said, noting that it will serve them well in the years ahead.
Trevoncia and Guila were grateful for the assistance and thanked Parliamentary Representative Liburd for contributing in a tangible way to their continued growth.
Due to extra school activities, Minister Liburd was forced to reschedule the scholarship presentation to the successful Cayon primary student to Friday, July 10.
The constituency representative encouraged all students to find productive ways to occupy their time during the summer holidays. He singled out those who will be attending high school next term and implored them to remain committed and reject antisocial influences.
Minister Liburd turned his attention to the teachers and stated that much of the successes in the education structure were a result of their hard work.
“Over the last 14 years I have seen tremendous improvement in the education system in the country and in our students, particularly here at the Deane-Glasford Primary School,” he told the gathering, noting that three doctors and two engineers immediately come to mind when think of past students.
“I am really pleased with the tremendous performance of our teachers,” Honourable Cedric Liburd stressed, while highlighting the incredible role they play in nation building.
