Government monitoring messy problem in Barbados

By: Jermine Abel, SKNVibes.com
BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, Jan.12.2018 – THE Government of St. Kitts and Nevis is keeping a close watch on the ongoing raw sewage situation in Barbados, that has caught international attention.

The problem is said to be out of control and has seen the Governments of the United States, Canada and just recently, the United Kingdom issuing advisories for their citizens visiting the island.

An official at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in St. Kitts and Nevis explained that they are “monitoring” the problem very closely, despite not issuing an advisory.

The official noted that no determination has been made with regards to if any advisory would be made. But reiterated that they would continue to keep a close watch as the problem develops.

The raw sewage problem SKNVibes understands stems from a mechanical breakdown, which according to reports out of Barbados, has reached crisis levels.

Just recently, two British tourist who are said to be frequent tourists to island fell ill. According to reports, the two reportedly came down with Gastroenteritis - inflammation of the intestine and Stomach (CDC).

That report may have prompted governments to issue travel advisories, warning citizens from travelling to the affected areas.

The problem is reported to be on south coast of Barbados, between Hastings and St Lawrence.

Health officials on the island are said to be investigating over 35 local cases of Gastroenteritis in the same area.

Barbados’ Chief Medical Officer, Dr Kenneth George recently stated that based on investigations, a number of the cases occurred during the Christmas period, and may be viral in nature.

“While epidemiological investigations are continuing, no organisms have been identified through laboratory testing. In addition, the outbreak has not been linked to any particular food or beverage,” George explained, according to a CMC report.

The Government is reportedly working assiduously to contain the problem before the situation has a major impact on the tourism sector.
