BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – A number of criminal matters set for hearing during the earlier part of this month have been rescheduled for later in the month to facilitate the trial or hearing of other matters brought before the Basseterre High Court of Justice.

The guns and ammunition case brought against Verlyn Zakers was scheduled to be heard yesterday. However, in light of the ongoing case at the High Court, the trial date is now set for Monday, July 13, 2009.

Zakers has been slapped with four charges: illegal possession of firearms, illegal possession of ammunition, illegal importation of firearms and illegal importation of ammunition. The alleged offences occurred on June 12, 2008 at the Robert L. Bradshaw International Airport.

The accused will be represented by Dr. Henry Browne with assistance from Barrister-at-Law Vincent Warner.

Bishu Isaac, who is charged with the April 18, 2008 stabbing death of 26-year-old Tau Gowon, was to have been heard on Monday, July 6. However, this matter has been rescheduled for Wednesday, July 22 and he will be represented by Chesley Hamilton.

Charged with the offence of “wounding with intent”, Louis Richards’ trial was to have begun on Monday (July 6) and has been rescheduled for Thursday, July 23.

Anthony Daniel is charged with “wounding with intent” and “unlawful wounding”, and his trial was to have begun yesterday but he will have to wait an approximate two more weeks before it begins. The trial date is set for Wednesday, July 22, 2009.

“Wounding with intent” and “unlawful wounding” are the offences with which McClean Hendrickson has been charged. At the commencement of the May 2009 Criminal Assizes, his case was scheduled to be heard on July 7. However, circumstances didn’t permit the commencement of the hearing then and it was rescheduled for Thursday, July 23. He is being represented by Marsha Henderson.

Shuffling of other cases is expected to take place and it is also expected that those cases which cannot be heard during this Assizes, for whatever reason, will be traversed to the September 2009 Criminal Assizes.
