Newton Ground Primary Goes Solar

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, Jan.19.2018 – Over 40 solar panels have been installed at the Newton Ground Primary school, made possible through a donation from the Fahies Agricultural Women’s Cooperative Society Limited.

At a presentation at the school on Wednesday (Jan.17), Minister of Education, Hon. Shawn Richards said the initiative is a way of giving back to the community, and to the institution.

He explained that the cooperative saw a need for constant and reliable supply of electricity to bolster their storage facility at the institution, and they birthed the idea to have the panels installed. At peak performance, the panels are capable of generating 11.4 kilowatts of power.

“Not only does this project advance the government’s policy of renewable energy and a means of reducing reliance on fossil fuel, but it also fits into the agenda of the Global Environmental Facility for the protection of the environment.”

To this end, Richards stated that the co-operative arm has long been affiliated with the school, and it seeks to ensure that “it is one of the leading schools in the Federation”.

Further, the Minister stressed that the project puts the students of the school at the cutting edge of science and technology.

“This venture could redound to the benefit of the students, by prompting them to become more interested in things scientific and technological.”

Agriculture Minister, Hon. Eugene Hamilton told the students that education is very important, adding that it is the greatest equalizer in the world.

“...if you educate yourself, then you can stand on any stage with anyone and make your voice be heard. So, pay attention to your education; this today is an education for you.”
