GIS, 22 January 2018 - The Government of the Virgin Islands is moving to address the Territory’s post-disaster housing issues and is calling local contractors to register their interest in carrying out home repairs.

The call is part of the Hurricane Irma Housing Recovery Plan spearheaded by the Ministry of Health and Social Development in collaboration with other key agencies to address the unmet needs of homeowners with a focus on rapid home repairs and possible reconstruction.

Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health and Social Development, Mrs. Petrona Davies said following the passage of hurricanes Irma and Maria, a significant number of persons in the population experienced extreme damage to their homes.  She said the goal is to assist these vulnerable households as quickly as possible in this first instance.

The contractors who register will comprise a database of qualified contractors that will be accessible to make the tender process for housing projects more efficient. Contracts may be issued directly by the Government or other funding agencies.

Qualified contractors are required to submit a cover letter outlining their interest and similar projects undertaken. This should be accompanied by a valid trade licence; certificates of Good Standing from Inland Revenue, Social Security Board and the National Health Insurance; and must have a minimum of five (5) years’ experience in the construction field.

Contractors are asked to address these documents to the Permanent Secretary, Mrs. Petrona Davies and submit them to the Ministry of Health and Social Development, located at Old Peebles Hospital Annex in Tortola. The documents can also be emailed to ministryofhealth@gov.vg.

Registration ends on Friday, January 26.

Persons can telephone the Ministry of Health at 852-7742 for more information about the registration process.
