Warner Park loses out on ICC Women’s World Cup

By: Staff Reporter, SKNVibes.com
BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, Jan.22.2018 – DESPITE efforts to push Warner Park as one of the top venues in the region, it has lost out in the race to host matches during the 2018 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup.

Initially, Warner Park was one of twelve venues - including in Jamaica, Guyana, St. Lucia, Barbados, Trinidad and Tobago - that were reviewed last year to host matches in this year’s World Cup.

However, SKNVibes has learnt that Antigua and Barbuda, Guyana and St. Lucia were the successful venues selected to host matches.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) – the governing body for the sport – has organized the 2018 event as a stand-alone, as often they have held them in concurrent with the men’s tournament.

This is third time West Indies would be hosting a major World Cup event, and the tournament is slated to be held in November.

All the teams have not been confirmed for the tournament, as the ICC Women’s World Twenty20 Qualifier is slated for Netherlands from 3-14 July.
However, New Zealand, India, Pakistan, South Africa, Sri Lanka and England, will join host West Indies.

According to a statement from the International Cricket Council (ICC), Chief Executive David Richardson expressed delight at having the three venues host the tournament.

“Of course, Windies women are the reigning ICC World Twenty20 champions and I’ve no doubt they’ll be looking to defend their title on home soil. We are keen to build on the momentum from this summer’s Women’s World Cup and I’m sure the players can rely on a warm welcome from the legendary cricket fans in the West Indies and we’re all in for a great experience in the Caribbean.”

The details of the tournament, including groups and fixtures, will be announced in due course.

The venues inspected were, Sabina Park, Jamaica; National Cricket Stadium, Grenada; Brian Lara Cricket Ground & Queen’s Park Oval, Trinidad; Guyana National Stadium, Guyana; Three Ws Oval & Kensington Oval, Barbados; Darren Sammy Cricket Ground, St. Lucia; Coolidge Cricket Ground & Vivian Richards Cricket Ground, Antigua; and Warner Park, St. Kitts.
