Canadian to donate tennis gears to Sports Ministry and enthusiast

By: Staff Reporter, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, Jan.23.2018 – BARRY Jacobson, a Canadian who has a love for St. Kitts and Nevis, and seeing youth development has donated a quantity of equipment to the local tennis community.

After reading reports by SKNVibes Sports about a group of individuals looking at resuscitating tennis locally, Jacobson and  his wife are in St. Kitts to hand over the tennis racquets, balls and other items to the Ministry of Sports on Wednesday.

He told SKNVibes News that he was impressed with the way the children are well behaved here in St. Kitts and Nevis as opposed to some in his district of Canada.

“Putting all of that together, I have a love for tennis and the doctor (Dr. Kennedy Simmons) and let us see if we can get 150 tennis racquets and put it into the kid’s hands. Because if a kid has a racquet in one hand and a ball in the other, there is a good chance that they would not have a gun.”

While in Canada, Jacobson ventured to a number of clubs and sport outlets to garner balls, racquets, bags and other equipment to donate to St. Kitts and Nevis.

He explained that he utilized government buildings to post flyers to gain support in his drive, while using his tennis club as a facility to store equipment that he got from the public.

As part of his plan, he and his wife decided to travel to St. Kitts themselves to hand over the racquets and other equipment themselves.

That donation is slated for Wednesday afternoon, at the Warner park Tennis facility.

Tennis enthusiast, Rusty Liburd told SKNVibes Sports that the donation would go a long way in the development of the sport locally.

He explained that it is going to be a great contribution to the tennis public in St. Kitts and Nevis, reminding that when he was younger he did not have a racquet to play with and would have to go to the coach to borrow.

That left a void when he left his training sessions in the evening, but with the donation, he believes that the donation would give children the opportunity to practice outside of their training sessions.

“ I think the contribution will make a significant improvement to the tennis playing public here.”

He believes that other corporate or private entities can follow Jacobson, and contribute to the enhancement of the sport locally.
