BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, Jan.24.2018 – NEVIS’ Premier Mark Brantley says the recent killing of Shirley Dawn Morton should have people outraged, especially women.
Speaking in Parliament yesterday (Jan. 23), Brantley admonished the violent behaviour often observed by men in relationships.
“…[men] if there are difficulties in relationships, the answer is not, cannot, and will never be violence. That has to be the position, that we must appeal to our males – there is no presumptuousness to that. We are appealing to our male folk, whether they wear boots and go out to the construction site or they wear jacket and tie,” Brantley emphasized.
Morton was found dead over the weekend at her boyfriend’s home with visible head wounds. The Police confirmed that the cause of death was by blunt force trauma.
No one has yet been charged in relation to the incident but the premier’s sentiments follow a public call by the police for assistance in locating Morton’s boyfriend, Wayne 'Spyer' Chapman, as a person of interest.
He lamented that these are the issues that are bedeviling the society that must be talked about.
“All man out there who like to hit women ayo stop! Stop it! Because it is unacceptable in any society for that to happen, and it must be unacceptable in St. Kitts and Nevis, Mr. Speaker,” Brantley exclaimed.
“We must call on our people to act responsibly. Walk away. If you and your partner have confusion; you and your guy down the road have confusion; you and your schoolmate have confusion, we must encourage our people to walk away.”
