Labour Party throws support behind leader

By: Jermine Abel, SKNVibes.com
BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, Jan.29.2018 – THE St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party (SKNLP) has thrown its support behind its leader, Dr. Denzil Douglas, who has come under the microscope by the government for allegedly having a Dominican passport.

Just recently, the government moved to file legal proceedings in this matter through a fixed claim form, challenging Douglas’ eligibility to be a member of parliament.

Speaking on Freedom FM today, Parliamentary Representative for Constituency 3, Konris Maynard indicated that his party sees the move by the government as being mere distraction “from the real issues affecting the people St. Kitts and Nevis”.

Maynard explained that something must be going good with the Labour Party that has the government concerned.

Further, he stated that the move by the government would only embolden the support for the party and its leader.

“We will come out and defend our party and our leader, whom we democratically elect every year,” Maynard disclosed.

Further, he said: “We see this in the party as a very vindictive effort on the part of the dying government…and is wasting government resources, because you’re going to put the government through what I believe is going to be a meaningless case.”

That, according to Maynard, comes as the party’s constitution does not allow for any candidate to have dual citizenship.

The MP noted that his party’s constitution has taken the position to mimic that of the country’s.

“…obviously, as Dr. Douglas has said, he is only a citizen of St. Kitts and Nevis – and thus there would not be any need to go any further to enquire any of his other dealings.”

He claimed that it is part of an orchestrated attempt to discredit the leader, as polling data shows that he is the preferred leader of the party.
Since the scandal came to light, Dr. Douglas has denied all allegations that he is a citizen of Dominica, and that he is the holder of a Diplomatic Passport.

But the government contends that he is ineligible to sit in the parliament, citing similar cases involving Lindsay Grant and Shawn Richards.
