SKNLP to Select Four New Candidates

By: Jermine Abel, SKNVibes.com
BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, Jan. 30.2018 – FOLLOWING a brief period of reviewing and rebranding, the St. Kitts and Nevis Labour Party (SKNLP), will soon be releasing the names of four new candidates that would campaign in the  next general elections.

SKNVibes understands that Parliamentary Representatives for Constituency Two, Three and Six are returning, while representative for Constituency Eight, Dr. Terrance Drew has also found favour with the party.

Speaking on radio yesterday (Jan. 29), Representative for Constituency Three, Hon. Konris Maynard debunked claims that the party is in turmoil, as is being reported on social media since they were rebranding for the next elections.

Maynard pointed out that he is pleased with the way the candidate selection process was undertaken.

He explained that in May of last year, the Party leader and executives were given a mandate by the delegates to proceed on a transparent and democratic process – or rather an improvement of that process.

Resulting from that, Maynard explained that a committee was formed to carry out the selection.

“So, the candidate Selection Advisory Committee was formed, and it embarked on the process of candidate selection. In every single constituency, anyone as a member of the party, or anyone who desires to become the candidate for the St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party had to submit an application or a letter of intent to begin that process.”

The Representative disclosed that he did such for Constituency 3. Coming off the application process, the party had 18 applicants in the 8 constituencies.

He revealed that in some of the constituencies, there were 14 applicants for four spots.

Following an elimination process the eventual candidates were selected, without any possibility of a runoff..

But the MP noted that the committee was tasked with the responsibility of ensuring that “those who may not become the candidate understand that because they were a part of the process, and because we are a democratic organization they would be forever part of our process going forward”.

Against that backdrop, he noted that the committee had the responsibility to deal with any fall out from anybody who did not become a candidate.

But he did note that he is not aware of any signs of turmoil or fall out from the process.
