BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, Jan. 30.2018 – Reports coming out of Guyana have indicated that the country’s government and their Venezuelan counterparts will be heading to the International Court of Justice to decide the contentious border issue.
Since 1899, Venezuela has claimed that two thirds of Guyana is rightfully theirs on the grounds that it was under their owner during the time of colonialism.
According to reports, the United Nations General Secretary today, informed both governments that the UN has taken a decision to have the matter deferred to the International Court.
The matter was settled in 1966 after Venezuela a Geneva agreement, but it was raised again several years after.
The matter was raised again following Guyana’s 2015 elections, where Exxon Mobil disclosed to the new government that they found oil in a large quantity.
Media outlets in Guyana have indicated that the country’s President, David Granger will make a public address to the nation today.
