By: Jermine Abel, SKNVibes.com
BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, Feb. 02.2018 – PRIME Minister, Dr. Timothy Harris says that electoral reform is a priority area for his government, pointing out that it will come before the National Assembly during a sitting this month.

Dr. Harris, while responding to a question posed by SKNVibes at his monthly press conference yesterday, stated that it is certainly one of the areas that will be on the agenda.

Further, it was revealed that the matter was on Wednesday (Jan. 31) discussed at the Cabinet level.

“At our meeting of our Cabinet yesterday, we did give that direction to the honourable attorney general so that persons involved in the drafting of legislation, would have adequate time to attend to that particular matter.”

Since taking office The government pledged  that it would carry out electoral reform, after they alleged breaches at the electoral office, and malpractices during the 2015 General Elections.

The Team Unity Administration subsequently launched a two-pronged investigation into those allegations, and just recently, then Supervisor of Elections Wingrove George was arrested and charged with Misconduct in Public Office.

Dr. Harris stated that: “Electoral Reform, just for avoidance of doubt is a priority for the government. And we certainly will do what is necessary to ensure that we have a system that can deliver free and fair elections at regular intervals.”

“All the other outrages that would have occurred in the long past, we will ensure that it is part of the law and is never to be repeated.”

Coming out of the reform, the PM noted that they would ensure “one man, one vote”, and people would vote in the particular area that they reside.

To that end, he stated that the reform process will be an ongoing exercise that will be carried out periodically.
