Distraught father to seek second opinion on son’s death

The late Shaquille Pemberton

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – FOLLOWING two autopsy reports on the death of Shaquille Pemberton, in which the latter confutes the findings of the former, his father, Nigel Arthurton, has voiced his dissatisfaction and indicated that he would be seeking a second opinion from a renowned Forensic Pathologist in St. Lucia.

The lifeless body of 23-year-old New Road resident was discovered by a passerby in an open lot in Gillard Meadows in the vicinity of the Control Tower of the Robert Llewellyn Bradshaw International Airport on January 27, 2018.

According to a police press release dated Saturday (Feb. 3), a forensic pathologist, Dr. Valery Alexandrov, had reported that Pemberton’s death was “due, in part, to acute pulmonary failure due to haemorrhagic viral myocarditis and pneumonia”.

In other words, the findings indicated that he died of natural causes.

However, in a press release yesterday (Feb 6), the police stated that since  undertaking further laboratory tests in Trinidad, Dr. Alexandrov has revised the cause of death and “is of the view that there are other inconsistencies surrounding the manner (mode) of death that merit further investigation”.

In an exclusive interview, SKNVibes sought a comment from Arthurton on the issue.

“In a nutshell, as I said all along, are the findings of what were talked about and explained to me on his body. Now, how can someone die from natural causes with a dislocated neck bone? I am not a scholar but common sense will tell you that that is just not adding up...it’s just not adding up! So, I stuck to that from ever since,” the distraught father said.

Arthurton claimed that there were marks on his son’s stomach that were not present when he was alive and, he therefore questioned a police officer about them.

“He told me that the marks on his stomach were insect bites. I asked what kind of insects can cause something like that. I didn’t get a full explanation about the kind of insects that could do something like that. I understand now that the marks are like stabs, but they did not penetrate. It’s like somebody was digging him with some pointed object. That is what the police indicated to me. So I said that sounds like torturing to me.”

Highlighting the contents of the second press release issued by the police, this publication asked Arthurton if he thought the forensic pathologist was at fault by issuing such a statement before the sample that was sent overseas had returned to the Federation.

“Well, for me, I would have completed all of my investigations before saying anything to the media, because now it sounds like he is insulting me and my family to say that my son died from natural causes and now he comes back with a different thing. So, I want to know what’s next.”

He was also asked if he would be seeking results of another autopsy, to which he answered in the affirmative.

“Speaking to my lawyer, I was advised to get a second opinion and we contacted Shepherd King from St. Lucia. However, we didn’t really get to talk to him, but we got his name and I do intend to get a second opinion.”

Arthurton described his son as “a cool guy” who never ran afoul of the law and was not a member of any gang in the twin-island Federation.

“He liked to know that he went about his own business and do whatever he had to do. He would leave his home for work, and from work back to his home. He could have always been found either on his phone or computer playing games,” Arthurton added.

Arthurton lamented that none of his family members could cope with his his son’s death, “knowing what the first autopsy reported that he died from natural causes and now the second one is saying something different”.

He however pointed out that the contents of the second press release had brought some degree of relief to family members, “but my thing is for the police to catch the perpetrator or perpetrators. That is what we really, really want now”.

“My thing,” he stressed, “is, why did the authorities in the first place accept the report that he died from natural causes and now have to spend so much money and feel comfortable with that and now come back with a second findings. Why spend so much money to the individual. I thing that he had insulted the whole nation of St. Kitts and Nevis whom he works for...I mean it’s taxpayers money being paid to him. If you are going to come in and do a job, do it properly and don’t give anyone the any reason to assess your professionalism.”

The second press release also stated that on the basis of Dr. Alexandrov revised caused of Pemberton’s death, “the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force are continuing investigations and will be seeking the support of the public to assist with their enquiries”.
