PAM's Secretariat

Basseterre, St. Kitts - St.Kitts-Nevis Prime Minister Denzil Douglas violated a court ordered injunction and moved forward with his plan to steal the election by changing the boundaries at the last minute. Hundreds of PAM supporters took to the streets to protest this undemocratic move.

Before the protest, PAM Leader Lindsay Grant received a threatening phone call, and, at the protest, he was assaulted by the police -- all for standing up for our democracy and the rule of law.

HUNDREDS of supporters of the People’s Action Movement took to the streets of Basseterre last night (Wednesday) to protest the move by Prime Minister Denzil Douglas to move to change constituency boundaries in defiance of a court order.

The High Court has granted an injunction filed by Hon Shawn Richards, PAM”s MP representing constituency #5 to stop the parliament from address the report on the constituency boundaries until the challenge is aired.

The challenge comes up in court on Monday.

But in spite of the injunction, Prime Minister Douglas and his St Kitts Labour Party pushed for the sitting to debate the report.
The People’s Action Movement is arguing that the move to change the boundaries at the 11th hour, only just before fresh general elections, is unconstitutional and against the cause of natural justice.

Douglas has been in a made rush to push the changes to the boundaries since internal reports from the Labour Party show that the incumbent is sliding to defeat with the current configurations.

PAM is adamant that the unconstitutional move is an attempt by the Prime Minister to steal the next general elections.

“I want to say to you that you have been waiting for 14 years for this change. You are not going to allow Denzil Douglas to thief your victory in the middle of the night,” PAM’s leader Lindsay Grant told cheering supporters Wednesday night.

Parliament was called in emergency session on Wednesday, and then resumed again Thursday.

“Today is a sad, sad day in the history of St Kitts and Nevis. Denzil Douglas has gone beyond the boundaries of common decency in this country. What has happened today is that a desperate man is trying now to intimidate the court,” Mr. Grant declared in describing the illegal reconvening of parliament.

Following a meeting held at short notice in Central Basseterre, Mr Grant led supporters to a march on Government Headquarters.
The marchers sang ‘WE SHALL OVERCOME. “WE WANT CHANGE’ and ‘WHEN PAM GO MARCHING IN.”

The opposition supporters said they were protesting what some officials have described as the beginning of an attempt by the ruling party to hijack upcoming elections in an attempt to give Prime Minister Douglas a fourth term.

Mr Grant was assaulted by police after he was pushed down the steps of government headquarters where the marchers gathered, to the ire of supporters.

Earlier in the night, Mr Grant revealed that he had received a threatening call.

“I got a call tonight and at the other end of the call was a male caller, and the male caller (said) to me that I am not going to be living come the next election,” he said. “But I want to tell them no threats by the Labour Party could stop your leader.”

Threats. Violence. Ignoring the courts. Violating the Constitution. Undermining our democracy. And, trying to steal an election. This is what Labour has lowered themselves to. We need change.
