TT terror threat foiled; UK issues travel advisory

By: Staff Reporter, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, Feb. 09.2018 – LAW enforcement officials in Trinidad and Tobago are reporting that a terror threat targeting February 12 and 13 Carnival, has been foiled.

According to a report published in today’s edition of the Trinidad Guardian, T&T Police Service yesterday revealed it had disrupted a threat to disrupt Carnival activities mere days before the festival.

The threat comes several days before one of the region’s biggest events is set to culminate, when thousands of people from across the region and internationally are expected to converge in the twin-island nation.

“The TTPS has unearthed credible information of a threat to disrupt Carnival activities,” the newspaper quoted Police Service, Public Information Officer, Michael Jackman.

The Public Information Officer, according to reports refused to give specific details about the threat. He indicated though that the information received is going through intelligence gathering.

The threat has prompted the UK High Commission to issue a statement urging their citizens to be careful when travelling to Trinidad and Tobago.

“Terrorists are very likely to try to carry out attacks in Trinidad and Tobago. Attacks could be indiscriminate, including in crowded spaces and places visited by foreigners.

The Trinidad and Tobago authorities have arrested some individuals who planned to carry out attacks against Carnival on 12 and 13 February 2018. An attack is still possible. The Trinidad and Tobago government is increasing security measures for the Carnival. You should remain vigilant and avoid crowded places and large gatherings.”

The Trinidad and Tobago government has over the last several years informed that a number of its nationals were being recruited to join the Islamic State (ISIS); with many travelling to Syria and other countries to fight.

Governments in Trinidad and throughout the region have raised concerns about Caribbean nationals returning, and the possibility of them inculcating ISIS’ belief – thus radicalizing people.
