Government receives draft Carnival Village design

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, Feb. 09.2018 – THE Government is still in talks with a Taiwanese designer about the specifications for the proposed new multi-purpose Carnival Village.

Culture Minister, Hon. Shawn Richards recently told a gathering at a town hall meeting that the Ministry, during the course of last year, was able to garner assistance from the Taiwanese Government with identifying an architect to look at the current Carnival city and give a design for a facility.

According to Richards, the design must include the facility being the home for basketball, netball, volley, and performing arts.

“In late November, the architect came back to the Ministry with the conceptual design for the particular facility…the St. Kitts Multi-sports Center.”

The Minister informed that it is the same company which designed the Nevis Performing Arts Center (NEPAC).

Giving specifics, the Minister stated that the ground floor will be able to accommodate an administrative area, consisting of 14 rooms inclusive of coach’s area, room for medics; office meeting rooms, among others.

The first floor will be an arts and crafts area, which is also a multi-purpose area; on the second floor will be a VIP area, consisting of offices, a broadcast area, among other spaces.

It was revealed that when the initial design was presented, the Ministry wasn’t too happy with the seating capacity which stands at 1200, and as such they asked the architect to make changes in order to increase the capacity to 3,000.

Against that backdrop, the Minister disclosed that they are awaiting an update on the proposed changes.

The Minister did not give figures on the cost of the project and where the funds would be sourced to construct the facility.

During the lead up to the 2015 General Elections the government had promised to construct a new Carnival Village, along with an indoor basketball facility.
