Customs find guns in package at airport

By: Staff Reporter, SKNVibes.com
BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, Feb. 13.2018 – OFFICERS from the Customs Department stationed at the R. L Bradshaw International Airport yesterday (Feb. 12.) found two weapons and suspected marijuana that were shipped to the Federation.

According to reports coming out of the Police Force, officers discovered two firearms along with a large quantity of compressed vegetable material suspected to be Cannabis inside a package.

Law enforcement officers found one Glock .34 pistol with one empty magazine and one Smith & Wesson .38, along with the vegetable material.

The police in a statement confirmed that the vegetable materials weighed approximately 500 grams or 1 pound and was taken into their custody.

The latest discovery comes several weeks after an American tourist was found with a weapon as he was checking in to depart St. Kitts.

He was reportedly fined US$2,000, and SKNVibes understands that the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) has filed a challenge to the Magistrate’s decision.

The police force said: “Increasing the number of firearms taken off the streets is one of several goals the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force (RSCNPF) set for itself.  This would also include preventing firearms from getting into the hands of those who try to smuggle them into the country. The Police are also committed to removing drugs from our communities. However, meeting these goals would not be possible without strategic partnerships.”

The force indicated that they intend to meet its goals by collaborating with other agencies, which is one of six crucial areas that were identified to guide their efforts.

The find brings the total number of firearms removed to three.
