Oldest university in the Americas to host Lima 2019 football tournaments

    Lima; 13 February 2018: The oldest university in the Americas, the public National University of San Marcos, has signed an agreement with Lima 2019 that will see it host women’s and men’s football for the Lima 2019 Pan American and Parapan American Games.  

     

    Under the terms of the agreement, Lima 2019 will fully refurbish the university stadium with seats for 32,000 spectators, a new athletics track and upgraded accessibility standards, leaving a lasting legacy for the public institution and the local community.  
     
    The stadium, which is located between the districts of Lima and Callao on the west side of the Peruvian capital, will also be fitted with a brand-new football pitch and training facilities, all of which will meet the highest international standards required by FIFA to host its competitions.  

    Speaking from yesterday’s signing ceremony at the San Marcos stadium, Lima 2019 President Carlos Neuhaus said:  
     
    “We are delighted to have signed an agreement with the National University of San Marcos to stage the Lima 2019 football competition there. San Marcos is the oldest University in the Americas, and will soon be home to a world-class stadium capable of hosting a variety of international competitions. Legacy has been front and centre of our planning so we are particularly pleased by this agreement, which will benefit one of the continent’s top public universities, its 35,000 students and the surrounding community.” 
     
    National University of San Marcos rector Orestes Cachay said: 
     
    “This is a unique opportunity to grow our institution. San Marcos will be on display to the world and 350m people will see our university. We are grateful for the gesture towards the San Macros community and in addition, we are putting our 35,000 students at the disposal of Lima 2019 to work as volunteers for the Games”.  
     
    The projected cost of the refurbishment is 47m PEN (14.4m USD) which is provided for in the Lima 2019 infrastructure budget, is scheduled to begin in March this year.  
     
    About the Lima 2019 Pan American and Parapan American Games 
     
    The Lima 2019 Pan American Games will see approximately 6,700 athletes from 41 countries compete in 39 sports and 62 disciplines. The Games will take place between 26 July and 11 August 2019. The Lima 2019 Parapan American Games will see 1,890 athletes compete in 17 sports and 18 disciplines between 23 August and 01 September 2019.
