CHARLESTOWN NEVIS (July 12, 2009) -- The Development Bank of Saint Kitts and Nevis, through its sponsored Miss Culture Pageant contestant, has joined the 2009 Culturama Committee in spreading breast cancer awareness message.

Culturama, Nevis’ summer cultural festival, which is into its 35th year, is rallying support to spread awareness among members of the general public of the dangers posed by breast cancer in women and the unwarranted lives it claims each year.

To bolster this effort, the acting manager of the Nevis branch of the Development Bank of Saint Kitts and Nevis Hyacinth Pemberton joined with the bank’s sponsored Miss Culture Pageant contestant, Kishandra Williams, during the filming of a promo that will be aired on the Nevis Television Channel Eight.

The filming event by a Nevis Television crew, which took place on Thursday July 9 outside the bank’s office on Main Street, Charlestown, almost brought traffic to a standstill as motorists and pedestrians paused to find out what was happening.

“Fellow Culturama fans, I am Hyacinth Pemberton, Development Bank of Saint Kitts and Nevis representative,” introduced the acting manager. “I am here to tell you that breast cancer is the leading form of cancer and second leading cancer killer among women. Early detection is a must – it makes a difference for all of us.

“The Development Bank of Saint Kitts and Nevis is proud to be a part of Culturama 35 and we join with Kishandra in supporting the fight against breast cancer. Share beauty, spread hope. Breast cancer – let’s keep it out.”

Contestant Kishandra, who was accompanied by her chaperon, Calette James, introduced her sponsor the Development Bank of Saint Kitts and Nevis, which she said was established in 1981 and noted that “it has really lived up to its aim in assisting in the development of our people.”

She said that the message, which will be aired on Nevis Television for the period leading to Culturama 35, during the festival and after the festival, will go a long way in educating women to make checkups routine and added: “As a contestant of Culturama 2009, I do believe that early detection is definitely the key to fight breast cancer.”

Kishandra’s chaperon Calette James noted: “We want the ladies of St.. Kitts and Nevis to be aware of early detection and that early detection is the key to fight breast cancer. The promotion is being done by the Culturama Committee and the theme for this year is Fighting Breast Cancer and all the six contestants will be doing a similar promo.”
