BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, Mar.12.2018 – SPORTS Minister, Hon. Shawn Richards has told the volleyball fraternity that the soon-to-be constructed multipurpose facility in Carnival City will have space to accommodate them.
At a town hall meeting last month the Minister disclosed that he had received a drawing for the new multipurpose facility which will be located at Carnival Village, but he has asked for several changes to be made.
Speaking at a media conference against the backdrop of a regional volleyball meeting in St. Kitts, Richards said that the architect came in and took measurements of the Carnival Village location.
The measurements were taken, and a plan was drafted with the exact size of the facility, which the minister did not disclose.
“ Now we don’t have a particular timeline as yet. As I have indicated, we have the conceptual design; when we looked at it we were not satisfied with the seating capacity, as such we have asked the architect to make some adjustments to it.”
However, the conceptual design only has seating for approximately 3000 persons, a problem that the architect is remedying.
“We are awaiting the adjustments, and after that of course, we have to get the financing in place and we have to get the technical part of the plan; I mean size and all the electrical designs and everything.
According to the Minister, the facility will be the home to Carnival, volleyball, basketball, netball and other indoor activities.
He explained that the facility will also have an office space being provided there for meetings, noting that they are hopeful that the facility will also be able to house staff of the Department of Sport.
Though there is currently no estimated cost revealed for the facility or when construction will begin, SKNVibes has learned that the government will seek to begin sourcing funding soon.
That comes as the basketball and volleyball fraternities are pushing for a permanent indoor facility to further enhance their disciplines.
“Whilst that remains a challenge, we continue to march on around that, through that, and taking all that into consideration, we will do what we have to do with what we have. We are not going to overly spend too much time with things we have no control over,” President of the Volleyball Association, Glen Quinlan told SKNVibes Sport recently.
He continued: “We have control over getting the guys on the beach; we have control over getting the guys in the park and playing and we would do that in Netball City. When it doesn’t rain we will do that.”
