World Poetry Day in which the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) is the lead agency is commemorated annually on March 21. Poetry which has the capacity to capture the creative spirit of the human mind, though it serves as a window into the breathtaking diversity of humanity also reveals and reaffirms our common humanity, represented in our shared beliefs and values.
World Poetry Day is intended to lend support to linguistic diversity worldwide, through poetic expressions.
The day is also designed to promote the teaching of poetry, to herald a return to the oral tradition of poetry recitals, to encourage continuous dialogue between poetry and the other arts such as theatre, dance, music and painting. Through poetry endangered languages are given the opportunity to be heard and acknowledged in communities where there are certain minority groups, particularly those that speak a different language from that spoken by the greater population of the specific community.
The St.Kitts-Nevis National Commission for UNESCO humbly solicits your assistance as media practitioners to spread the word about the importance of promoting the reading, writing, publishing and teaching of poetry locally.
This can be done by:
1. Airing the World Poetry Day message from the Director General of UNESCO, Ms. Irina Bokova. (Attached)
2. Discussing the work of local poets during the daily talk shows on your radio station.
3. Including in your news package, a press release on same topic from the St.Kitts-Nevis National Commission for UNESCO.
