...voting underway at all polling stations
BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, Mar. 13.2018 – WITH Guyana making waves regionally for the discovery of large quantities of oil in its water, word broke on Sunday (Mar. 11) that Grenada has found the substance in commercial amounts.
That announcement came on the heels of polling day in St. Georges, where the incumbent Dr. Keith Mitchell is looking to return his New National Party back to office.
But the opposition, New Democratic Congress (NDC), has urged voters not to be fooled by the late announcement by the prime minister as they head out to cast their votes.
Dr. Mitchell has described the announcement as a game changer for the island.
"We can now confirm that we have found oil and gas in huge commercial quantities. Grenada is now on its way to becoming a major oil-producing country," Grenada Now quoted the Prime Minister as saying at a campaign rally on Sunday.
Many are viewing the Prime Minister’s announcement as a means to win over votes.
In a national address, leader of the NDC, V. Nazim Burke criticized the unemployment rate in the country, which he said is amongst the highest in the region.
In the speech, which was his final plea to garner support for his party, Burke referred to families where both parents are employed and still cannot afford to make ends meet.
He pointed to challenges facing the electorate in the area of health care.
“We have met people on the streets with donation sheets, desperate and seeking help because the cost of health care and medications are beyond their pockets.”
Those were amongst many critical issues that he brought to the fore in his speech ahead of the elections.
Early indications point to a smooth voting process on the island, with no reports of any disruptions.
