GIS, 13 March 2018 - The Ministry of Education and Culture’s annual Inter Secondary School Debates begin tomorrow Wednesday, March 14.

Education Officer with responsibility for co-curricular activities, Mrs. Heida Selwood said the Inter Secondary School Debates were organised with the aim of providing a sense of normalcy for students following the disruption caused by the weather events of 2017.

Mrs. Selwood added, “The Inter Secondary School Debates are a perfect means of developing the skills of our students. By communicating effectively, they are able to argue their points, they are adequately able to deal with controversies, and also this experience affords students an opportunity to interact with other students and even develop new friendships.”

The students will argue and develop topics including:

A parental escort policy should be enforced to restrict students under 18 from patronising public establishments during school hours.

Modern day natural disasters are a direct result of man’s unsustainable use of the environment.

Greater gun control measures will reduce crime in the Virgin Islands.

Alternative sources of energy can meet the energy demands of the Virgin Islands.

Privatisation of the public sectors will serve the public interest in the Virgin Islands

Residents are urged to support the students, as they debate current issues existing in the Virgin Island’s community. The debates will be held at the

Althea Scatliffe Auditorium and the finals will be held on Thursday, April 19 at 5:30 p.m..
