Sao Paulo, 13 March 2018 (IICA) -- On Wednesday, March 14, the ministers and deputy ministers of agriculture of various Caribbean countries will undertake a work agenda in Argentina as part of a mission coordinated by Manuel Otero, Director General of the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA). Luis Miguel Etchevehere and Jorge Faurie, ministers of agroindustry and of foreign affairs of Argentina, respectively, will welcome the ministers to their country, where they will attend the Expoagro agro-industrial fair.
The main objective of the ministerial mission organized by IICA, an organization that promotes agricultural development and rural well-being in the Americas, is to facilitate cooperation and access to nine technologies for vulnerable nations related to food security and climate change mitigation.
The ministers and deputy ministers of agriculture of Antigua and Barbuda, Dominica, Saint Kitts, and Nevis, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Saint Lucia, Bahamas, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, the Dominican Republic and Suriname will begin their work agenda on Wednesday, March 14 at 9:30am with a visit to the National Congress of Argentina, where they will engage in dialogue with members of the Commission on Agriculture, which is chaired by Senator Alfredo De Angeli.
High-level representatives of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) and the Caribbean Agricultural Research and Development Institute (CARDI), as well Caio Rocha, National Secretary for Food and Nutrition Security of Brazil, will also participate in the mission.
The senior officers of the Caribbean will also visit the National Agricultural Research Center of the National Institute of Agricultural Technology (INTA), where Juan Balbín, President of INTA, will lead them on a tour through the various research departments specializing in natural resources, climate and water, and family farming.
That day, they will also hold meetings with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Argentina and attend a dinner hosted by the Minister of Agroindustry and the Director General of IICA.
“It is both natural and necessary to foster this rapprochement between countries that are vulnerable to climate change and concerned about food security, and an economic superpower like Argentina, whose temperate-climate agriculture is one of the most efficient in the world. This complementarity affords opportunities to increase cooperation and carry out work in matters related to family farming, associative undertakings, the use of water resources, and resilience,” stated Otero.
On Thursday, March 15, the delegation will travel to San Nicolas to visit Expoagro, Argentina’s most important open-field, agro-industrial exhibition, where they will take part in a tour specifically organized for the ministers by local authorities.
Prior to participating in the mission to Argentina, the Caribbean ministers visited Brazil, where they were welcomed by their counterparts from the ministries of social development, Osmar Terra, and agriculture, livestock and supply, Blairo Maggi, as well as by Maurício Antonio Lopes, President of the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (EMBRAPA).
