BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – RESIDENTS of Russell Village were disrupted from their peaceful night time pursuits when a gunman opened fire late last evening (July 13) at a group of unsuspecting young men.

SKNVibes contacted Police Press and Public Relations Officer Inspector Cromwell Henry, who confirmed the incident had taken place and revealed that no one was injured. The police official also disclosed that two young men were being held in relation to the shooting.

“Police responded to a report made at around 9:30 p.m.” said Henry. “Once on scene, our investigations revealed that a silver Nissan car was travelling westwards along a road and as it got to the junction of that road and the road where Ottley’s Enterprise is located, an armed man came from the vehicle and began to fire at a group of men who were sitting on the side of the road. The men fled while the armed man continued to fire at them.”

He added, “Shortly after, officers of the Anti-gang Unit intercepted a car matching the description previously given along the island main road at Needsmust. The car was stopped and searched and certain items of evidence were found. The two occupants in the car were arrested on suspicion of shooting at with intent and remain in custody assisting with the investigation.”

Meanwhile, in keeping with a stated goal of reducing gun crime and violence within the Federation, members of the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force discovered over 100 rounds of ammunition this past week.

A recent Police Press and Public Relations communiqué informed that police officers searched an empty plot of land in Molineux Village on Monday. They discovered and seized a package containing 101 rounds of 7.62 ammunition and 14 rounds of 5.56 ammunition.
Although no one has yet been held accountable for possession, police officials reassured investigations are ongoing.

Police statistics indicate that 620 illegal rounds of ammunition have been found by security forces in 2009, a decrease over the 917 rounds collected over the same period last year. Overall, 1 028 rounds were discovered and seized in 2008.
