Culturama Senior Calypso Semi-finals set for July 25

By: Cherisse M. Sutton-Jeffers, SKNVibes

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – SOME calypsonians in the Federation have already signalled their intention to participate in the 2009 TDC-sponsored Senior Calypso Semi-finals, which is one of the many events slated for this year’s Culturama.

The event is scheduled for Saturday, July 25 and, according Antonio Liburd, Manager of the Festival Secretariat, he is not certain of all the calypsonians who would be competing but, so far, those confirmed are Dis n Dat, Astro, Hollywood, Reflector, Baker, Murray, Nutsie and Lady Luis, who he believes might be the only female contestant.

Meanwhile, three participants out of St. Kitts have also been confirmed - Big Lice, I-Soursup and King Pungwa.

Liburd also stated that on the night of the Semi-finals each calypsonian would perform two songs. He also explained that seven of them would be chosen to move on to the Finals scheduled for August 1, where they would do battle with the defending Monarch, Hussani ‘King Inspirer’ Parris.

The 14-year-old made history last year after his big wins as the youngest person to win a senior calypso contest and also the first person to win two crowns in one festival, as he was also crowned the Junior Calypso King.
