BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, Mar. 27.2018 – THE first international athletics track on Nevis will be opened tomorrow (Mar. 28), for the Primary School Championships on the island.
The Gulf Insurance-sponsored Primary School event will be held at the long-awaited Mondo track.
Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Sports in the Nevis Island Administration, Keith Glasgow told SKNVibes that everything is moving smoothly at the Mondo track for the major event.
“The progress is on pace and on track, and we will definitely be ready for the big meet on Wednesday.”
The track, which is located in Long Point, is being constructed to the tune of $10 million and is expected to attract international events.
Glasgow stated that there will be a big celebration tomorrow for both the opening of the track and the primary school event.
The opening of the Mondo track forms the first of phase of the project, which saw the rubberized surface being laid.
“The second phase will obviously be the completion of the Grandstand itself,” he said.
The PS could not give a specified timeframe on when the second phase will begin, only pointing out that it will be done in the very near future.
The LEFCO Construction Company and Surrey Paving are the companies SKNVibes understands are carrying out the construction work.
The local government was hoping to have the track finished in time for last year’s event, but those plans were scrapped as then Minister of Education and former Premier, Vance Amory was not satisfied with the progress of work at the time.
Tomorrow’s event is expected to sprint off at 12:00 p.m.
