BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, Mar. 27.2018 – SENIOR officials at Her Majesty’s Prison in Basseterre are currently investigating an incident that reportedly left one inmate hospitalized.
According to reports, an inmate (name withheld) was reportedly shackled and beaten while in prison.
Acting Superintendent of Prisons, Ashiela Connor confirmed to SKNVibes that they are currently investigating the incident that occurred in the correctional facility over a week ago.
He said that he cannot speak to the nature of the incident, only pointing out that it is currently under investigation.
The findings of that investigation, he said, will likely be made public.
SKNVibes News understands that this is the second incident that occurred in recent weeks.
Another inmate of the facility was reportedly hospitalized in a separate incident and left him nursing an injured leg.
Over the last several months, the top brass at the prison have been grappling with continued violence in the facility.
The prison facility is currently overcrowded, and the government has since 2015 proposed constructing a second penitentiary.
The proposed new facility is still in the drawing phase.
