GIS, 29 March 2018 - The Government of the Virgin Islands is continuing to put measures in place to provide a skilled labour force to assist in the Territory’s recovery efforts.
To this end, courses in the construction and marine industries will continue to be offered at the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College (HLSCC) on Tortola and Virgin Gorda from April 6 to June 6 and April 10 to 19.
Courses in construction will be offered from April 6 to June 6 and include Basic Roof Installation & Repair, Installation and Replacing Doors, Installation & Replacing Windows, Construction & Repair Overview for Homeowners, Managing Construction Projects, Basic Construction Installation, Refreshers Course for Builders, Basic Electricity (House Wiring), Basic Plumbing, and Generator Maintenance and Repair.
The courses in the Marine field will be offered from April 10 to 19 and include Marine Painting & Varnishing, Outboard Engine Maintenance and Sailboat Rigging. Orientation for this course will be held at Nanny Cay on April 5.
The Labour Department in partnership with HLSCC will be assisting with the registration process. BVIslanders/Belongers who are interested in enrolling in any of the upcoming courses should visit the Department of Labour on Tortola and Virgin Gorda and persons on Anegada and Jost Van Dyke are asked to contact their District Office.
Registration will take place from Tuesday, April 3 to 6 from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. in the lobby area of the Labour Department located on the first floor of the Ashley Ritter Building. Persons can also register at HLSCC.
Labour Commissioner, Mrs. Janice Rymer said the department continues to receive numerous requests from employers for skilled workers in both areas, and this is a prime opportunity for BVIslanders/Belongers who are unemployed or underemployed following the passage of Hurricanes Irma and Maria to consider a new career path, register for the courses, and assist with the rebuilding efforts.
Minister for Natural Resources and Labour, Dr. the Honourable Kedrick D. Pickering, highlighted the importance of working in partnership with the business community by imploring employers in both the construction and marine industries to contact the department should they require assistance in finding possible candidates to meet their employment needs.
