BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, Apr. 1.2018 – THE Customs and Excise Department (CED) has recorded an increase in the number of seizures made during the first quarter of 2018.

Thus far this year, the Department has recorded six seizures. Included in those finds were cannabis, one pistol with a matching magazine, and cocaine.

According to the Department, the cannabis totaled EC$450,000, with the most recent seizure on Monday 26th March 2018.

For the same period in 2017, the department only netted three seizures, according to Deputy Comptroller of Customs, Jomo Butler.

Though he could not provide additional information on the seizures, due to the fact that they are under investigations, he noted that it is increased diligence from officers that has led to those finds.

The Acting Comptroller of Customs, Kennedy Da Silva commended the officers of the CED for their diligence, while assuring the public that “the CED is committed to improving its capability to interdict illicit cross border activities and bring to justice the perpetrators of such illegal activities”.

In January, Customs and police officers netted marijuana in a water cooler with the name “Prestige Trucking Services”.According to police, 12 packets of marijuana were found in the heater weighing 8,337 grams.

On February 12, Customs officials found two firearms, one Glock .34 pistol and a Smith and Wesson.38, and a quantity of vegetable material, suspected to be cannabis at the R. L. Bradshaw International Airport.
