Cayon ready to compete in club shield

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, Apr. 5.2018 – THE FLOW Cayon 4G Rockets are prepped and ready to make a strong run at the 2018 Caribbean Club Shield tournament in the Dominican Republic.

According to club Secretary, Andy Blanchette, he is confident that the Cayon Football Club can advance to the semi-finals and even the finals of the competition.

The inaugural Caribbean Shield competition pits 12 of the region’s top champion clubs against each other, with a view to qualifying for the CONCACAF Champions League.

“A newly launched championship forming the base of the CONCACAF club competition platform, the Caribbean Club Shield features twelve teams from twelve different Member Association leagues, all of which are working with CONCACAF’s Development Department towards a long-term vision to professionalize the club game across the region. The Dominican Republic was selected as host of the inaugural Caribbean Shield after a detailed regional evaluation process,” CONCACAF said recently.

Blanchette said that in order for his team to perform well, they will have to go out and execute at the top of their game, the same way they have played over the last two seasons.

“I am certain that with that we would be able to advance to the semi-finals and hence finals,” the Secretary said.

The club received a donation from Parliamentary Representative for Cayon and Constituency Eight, Hon. Eugene Hamilton and the TDC Group of Companies.

According to Blanchette, the trip costs approximately US$30,000 and the EC$15,000 assistance from the Minister and the EC$5, 000 from TDC will go a long way in offsetting the high cost.

“The donation is well worth it and deserving and we are extremely happy because just to take a 25-man squad up to the Dominican Republic, it cost us well over $30, 000.”

Minister Hamilton reminded that he was a founding member of the Cayon Club and it remains as part of him.

That according to the Minister has spurred him to raise the funds and donate towards the trip.

“What is more important is, they have had two back to back championships; one which I would say is convincing, and it is a testament to the hard work put in by the youngsters and supported by their coach Yellow Man…And so, I wanted to give them some tangible support.”

Marketing Assistant at TDC, Dominic Matthew noted that their support forms part of the company’s ongoing contribution towards sports development in St. Kitts and Nevis.

“TDC has always contributed to sports in St. Kitts and Nevis, and our contribution to the Flow 4G Cayon Rockets this evening is just another one of those contributions to advance the game beyond the grass roots level.”
