April 6th, 2018 -- The St. Kitts and Nevis Football Association (SKNFA) has commended the Flow 4G Cayon Rockets for enlisting to participate in the 2018 Caribbean Shield tournament slated for the Dominican Republic from April 13-21. General Secretary of the SKNFA Mr. Stanley Jacobs said that the move by Cayon could only augur well for the club. “First and foremost I want to commend the Flow 4G Cayon Rockets, for in the very first place taking the initiative and the very bold step to register for the Caribbean Club Shield. Some 12 teams from across the Caribbean region have registered for what is the amateur version of the Caribbean Club Championships,” Mr. Jacobs said. “I believe ultimately that should be the goal of every club that plays domestic football in St. Kitts and Nevis. Not just to win the Premier League title but also to test the waters beyond our shores,” Mr. Jacobs said.
Mr. Jacobs said opportunities like these will give local clubs an opportunity to develop as they play other teams outside of St. Kitts and Nevis. He wants clubs locally to look beyond just wining their local leagues. “If you look across the football landscape within the Caribbean region, the clubs in Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago; even Antigua and the other islands, they are now looking not just to win their local league; they are wanting to advance to the Caribbean Club Championships and eventually to the CONCACF Champions League,” Mr. Jacobs said.
The Dominican Republic will host the inaugural edition of the CONCACAF Caribbean Club Shield on April 12-21. The 12-team championship provides a pathway for the region’s smaller football nations towards the newly formed 2018 Scotiabank CONCACAF League. The winner of the Caribbean Club Shield will play the fourth placed team in the 2018 Caribbean Club Championship in a playoff match for qualification place.
