Richards returned as leader, Powell new Chairman

By: Staff Reporter, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, Apr. 9.2018 – FOLLOWING the successful delegates meeting over the weekend, Deputy PM Shawn Richards has been  returned as the Leader of the People’s Action Movement (PAM), whilst Health Minister, Eugene Hamilton remains his deputy, and Jonel Powell was voted in as the new Chairman.

The new chairman told SKNVibes that his intention is to grow and build the party while assisting in moving the institution forward.

He said his primary aim is to strengthen the leadership of the party through changes.

“Changes are fluid, he said. “And my intention is to move forward and upward based on the changes in society. We have to keep up with it and with the people.”

Powell pointed out that the party needs to find new avenues to reach its supporters, noting that it is obvious that young people don’t communicate using the same mediums.

Building a stronger social media presence is one way he is looking to resonate with the younger generation, whom he noted are not too inclined with the radio.

“So, it is about taking the party forward in the same breath as the society that we are living in.”

Commenting on the misconception surrounding the party that its profile is not where it ought to be in the Team Unity government, Powell emphasized that he will work to lift the view and thinking of the people towards the party during his tenure.

“So certainly, that is something that we want to do. We are looking at an election in less than two years, and we certainly need to add to the account in parliament and in cabinet.”

Against that backdrop, he disclosed that the party is confident that they can win the seat in Central Basseterre and possibly in Constituency Six.

Also elected were Natasha Grey (Treasurer), Jacqueline Howell (Assistant Treasurer), Jonelle Rawlins (PRO) and Sheryl Reid (Deputy Chairperson).

All elected positions will be ratified at the party’s convention later this month.
