Old Road project expected to begin shortly

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, Apr. 11.2018 – THE government is currently in the process of finalizing the work to mitigate rock fall along the Old Road Bay .

Both the Team Unity administration and the former Denzil Douglas-led Labour government had been pushing to have work carried out, so as to avoid injury or death.

According to Public Infrastructure Minister, Hon. Ian Liburd, the contractor has already been selected based on the tendering process.

And currently, the consultants and the Ministry of Public Works are both negotiating with the selected contractor.

Work is slated to begin next month, and it will entail the contractors moving the road seawards.

“If you look at the position of the road at this moment, it will look like the road is sinking but the sea levels are rising. So what we are going to do to mitigate against that, is we are going to reclaim some land seaward, in order to move away from or to mitigate against the rock fall from the hills.”

Further, they will seek to shield the new site from weather damage with 12-ton rocks to protect against the sea.

Consideration was also given to the effects of climate change in making the determination to reclaim sections of the sea.

“The reclamation will be done in such a way that once it is reclaimed going seaward, you will have to protect the land that is being reclaimed through the armouring… the armouring will protect the road,” Liburd explained.

The government has also taken the strong hurricane winds into consideration in determining the best fit to protect from the rock falls, as they have seen gusts upwards of 160 mphs.

It was revealed that the project will cost the government $27 million to rehabilitate the location.

That location is susceptible to sea swells, land erosion and rock slides.Shortly after hurricane Maria, the road receive significant damage and resulted in the government spending thousands to fix the problem.
