Roadtown, Tortola - A new drainage system has been installed on the grounds of the Althea Scatliffe Primary and Enid Scatliffe Pre-Primary Schools.

Assistant Secretary in the Premier’s Office, Mrs. Elvia Smith-Maduro told the Department of Information and Public Relations, “The new system is to facilitate better drainage of the grounds and alleviate problems with accumulated water after rainfall.”

Mrs. Smith-Maduro said the project was undertaken by KM Construction and included the installation of more than 2,000 linear feet of perforated pipes at strategic points across the grounds.

“The contractor used a combination of eight and 12 inch perforated pipes for the project. Overall, 2,000 linear feet of eight inch pipes were installed, along with 330 linear feet of 12 inch pipes,” Mrs. Smith-Maduro added.

She further explained that the pipes installed beneath the surface will drain into a previously installed box drain.

The assistant secretary is optimistic that the new system will alleviate the problems experienced with poor drainage in the past, where huge puddles will accumulate after heavy rainfall, oftentimes preventing the children from using the grounds.

“Come September, students will be able to play in the yard, even after heavy rainfall because there should no longer be any large puddles of water,” she said.

Over the next few weeks, use of the grounds will be restricted to allow for settling and for the grass to grow.

The just completed project was supervised by the Premier’s Office. Government is committed to ensuring that the youth of the Territory have access to the best facilities to facilitate their personal growth and development.
