Saddlers stun St. Pauls 2-1 in National Bank Premier League action

Action in the Saddlers and St. Pauls match on Saturday night at the Warner Park football stadium
By: Andre Huie, Press Release

April 17th, 2018 -- The team from rural St. Kitts is once again proving to be a giant slayer. Fast Cash Saddlers United shocked title contenders S.L. Horsfords St. Pauls 2-1 on Saturday night at the Warner Park as action continued in the National Bank Premier League. Despite creating several opportunities to score, St. Pauls failed to get on the mark for most of the match. Coming out of halftime, Saddlers came out like a team with a mission and got an early goal in the 49th minute through Fernando Williams, who forced his way into a fast break and took his shot with composure past the St. Pauls custodian.

A defensive error from St. Pauls, due to what appeared to be a lack of focus, earned a second goal in the 74th minute for Saddlers from Steve Barnes. St. Pauls got a consolation goal from the penalty spot, which was converted by Darryl Challenger. Captain of Saddlers United Junique Eddy said after the match that the way they played St. Pauls is a blueprint for future success against the big teams in the league. “It’s a massive win. We have been fighting for most of the season and we’ve been losing some games by a one goal and we came out today and tried to stifle St. Paul’s midfield,” Eddy said. “We decided that we are going to block up the midfield and it paid off. We tried to press them as high as possible and we got goals,” he added.

Coach of St. Pauls Austin Huggins said his team must remain focused for their entire match in order to get results. He said they created enough chances to win the game, but just failed to put the ball in the back of the net. “If you don’t score, you don’t win. Simple as that. We dominated the game, had maximum possession but the ultimate is to get the ball in the net. We were not able to finish the many chances that we had and therefore we were not successful,” Huggins said.

Meanwhile, earlier on Saturday SOL IAS Conaree F.C. ran riot over TGE Dieppe Eagles, winning 7-0.
