BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, Apr. 17.2018 – AS the investigation continues into the beating of a prisoner in Her Majesty’s Prison in Basseterre, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of National Security, Osmond Petty confirmed that charges will be laid in the matter.
Several weeks ago, word broke that three prison officers had beaten and molested an inmate, who was subsequently hospitalized.
That incident saw many criticizing prison officials and those from the Ministry of National Security over the safety of inmates.
While addressing reporters on Friday (Apr. 13.) at a National Security Press conference, PS Petty disclosed that the matter is under investigation by the police and he was not going to comment on the issue.
He stated though they have gotten an opinion from the Legal Department, and as a result “charges will be laid”.
“The persons involved will be charged,” he said. “But I have not really had a chance to go through the report from the Legal Department.”
Prison officials in recent interviews with this media house never confirmed that the incident did took place.
However, a media report has surfaced that there was another incident which involved a prisoner being beaten. That incident, according to reports occurred at the JNF Hospital.
Over the last several months, there have been a number of incidents of disruptions at the federation’s largest penal facility.
Those incidents have left a number of prisoners nursing injuries as investigations are ongoing.
