Earth Day Celebration
Campaign Motto: “Plant A Tree….Adopt A Tree”
The Nevis Historical and Conservation Society (NHCS) will mark this year’s Earth Day at New River Coconut Walk area on Sunday, April 22 from 2 p.m by hosting an Information/Open Day dubbed “An Afternoon With the Earth”
During the event, there will be a test planting session. Those who turn up will learn about the history of New River Coconut Walk. They will also learn propagating techniques. Information on drought and salt resistant plants will be given out.
The Nevis Historical and Conservation Society (NHCS), in collaboration with the New River Farmers Corp. and the Department of Agriculture in Nevis and the Ministry of Tourism, have commenced the implementation of the Global Environment Facility (GEF) funded project, “Combating Land Degradation on the Historic New River and Coconut Walk Coastline” in Nevis.
The objective of this project is to rehabilitate the New River and Coconut Walk landscape to help create a favourable environment that will ensure environment friendly agricultural development, livelihoods and a unique visitor experience created by the outdoor New River museum.
In collaboration with Nevis Department of Agriculture, NHCS has launched a campaign titled “Plant A Tree….Adopt A Tree”, which will support reforestation efforts of the New River and Coconut Walk landscape. The campaign will target schools, Faith Based Organisations (FBOs), the business community and community groups.. The campaign will also bring awareness about the rich history of New River and Coconut Walk, the role of the farming community and land degradation issues..
