Premier Brantley: Social media policy will improve public sector

By: Jermine Abel, SKNVibes.com
BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, Apr. 18.2018 – PREMIER Mark Brantley says that the social media policy that was recently implemented for the Nevis Island Administration (NIA) will enhance the public service on the island.

The policy will  restrict government employees’ use of social media during their work day.

According to Brantley, among others, public servants cannot use social media to harass people sexually or otherwise; engage in criminal activities; partake in political propaganda, nor they cannot use social media on government’s time to personally benefit or have financial gains for themselves or family.

That comes as the premier indicated there has been a “deterioration” in the service that is being provided to the public.

Speaking on WINN FM’s ‘Inside the News’ programme on Saturday (Apr. 18), Brantley explained that “there are some who believe that they can come to work when they feel like, do as they want, take two-hour lunches as they want, drive up and down in government vehicles at all hours of day and night and the weekends”.

That indiscipline has trickled over to the work ethics of many, and Brantley pointed out that in many instances persons are found shopping or having whatsapp conversations during work hours.

“Doing everything except what they are being paid to do,” Brantley said.

The Premier and the Concerned Citizens Movement (CCM) had promised that they will bring relief and reinject a sense of discipline to the public service.

“The reason for that really is that we are seeking ministers and public servants alike to do a better job of serving the people that pay us. And that is what really, we are seeking to do.” Brantley noted.

He emphasized that the policy is not a new initiative that is being implemented. In fact, he said the government only implemented modern language into an existing policy that was in place.
