Roadtown, Tortola - The Department of Human Resources with the support of the Training Division and Ministry of Education and Culture has hosted another successful Returning Graduates/Students Transition Forum and Job Fair.

The fair, which is now in its third year, was held recently at the Callaloo Restaurant, Prospect Reef Resort to provide graduates and students scheduled to return to the Territory within one to two years with the information needed to assist them in their transition from university and tertiary training to the Virgin Islands workforce.

Director of Human Resources Mr. David Archer, speaking at the ceremony told the students, “we are trying to make a better connection between what you are studying and what you are going to do and hopefully in the future that transition, whether it is within the Virgin Islands Government, statutory body or private sector, is one that you have great information about.”

Mr. Archer added, “we are having difficulties placing persons within the public sector and the reason why this programme is important is so that we can assist our college and university graduates who we might not be able to place right away or in the near future, with information about other organisations and job opportunities so that we can work a plan for your transition.”

Human Resources Manager for Strategic Succession Planning Ms. Kaisa Penn welcomed the students and explained that “we wanted to give you the opportunity to get information, to be in a setting of this nature, and allow you the chance to interact with some of the representatives who are typically involved in the employment process within the represented organisations.”

Ms. Penn added that “this forum and fair will not only give you an insight into that process, but also gives you the opportunity to scan the organisations represented so that you can begin to identify the organisation in which you are interested in fostering your careers well in advance of your return”.

Representatives from the Ministries of Natural Resources and Labour, Education and Culture, Health and Social Development, Premier’s Office, Training Division, Department of Human Resources, BVI Tourist Board, BVI Health Services Authority and the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College made presentations during the forum, and hosted booths during the fair.

The Department of Human Resources continues on its quest towards building a ‘World Class’ Public Service through Continuous Change by ensuring that job opportunities within the public service are filled by qualified individuals.
