CHARLESTOWN, Nevis – CHILDREN across the Federation continue to benefit from an intensive educational fire-safety programme launched by the Fire and Rescue Services Department years ago.

Recently, some 50 children from the different primary schools in Nevis participated in the institution’s seventh annual Summer Safety Programme which was held at the Vance Amory Airport Fire Hall.

Over a three-day period, the children were reminded and informed of the purpose of fire and its dangers while inculcating in them, fire safety tips which they can take into their adulthood and carry for the rest of their lives.

The children were also told of safety tips that they could use to prevent fires and also those which could be used in the event of a fire emergency. They were also introduced to equipment such as smoke detectors, fire alarms and fire extinguishers, and were educated on their composition and uses.

Other topics covered during the programme include Water Safety and Road Safety.

Each attendee not only left with newfound or refreshed knowledge, but was also presented with a Junior Fireman Certificate indicative of their successful completion of the programme.

For their unparallel performance, Le'Andre Claxton and Ashley Thomas were adjudged Junior Fire Chief and Junior Deputy Fire Chief respectively, and were issued special fireman’s helmets and badges.

Divisional Fire Officer for the Nevis Division, Everette O’Garro told SKNVibes that he judges the success and or effectiveness of the programme by the number of fires recorded each year. He said, in his Division, decreases have been recorded over the past couple of years which indicate to him that the programme is working.

“The programme is successful. Our statistics continue to show a decrease in these kinds of emergencies for the past four years running. So we are definitely confident that the programme is meeting its objectives.”
