On the Spot: Bright, beautiful woman holds public’s interest 24 years later

By: Valencia Grant, SKNVibes
BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - THE last On The Spot column titled “Have you seen her?  three missing female cases turn up mixed results” elicited an overwhelming response from readers.

Judging from the number of story views, posted comments, telephone calls and on-the-street feedback, it is clear that people are still very intrigued by the unsolved disappearance of Renée Farrier back on Friday, March 22, 1985.

    Unanswered Questions

Was Renée a victim of foul play?

Did Renée, a brilliant and beautiful 19-year-old, leave on her own volition?

Could Renée be alive but “just somewhere out there making a good life for herself” as an online commenter named Clarides hoped?

After the story’s publication on SKNVibes two weeks ago, I encountered an article in the Saturday, February 9, 1985 edition of The Democrat Newspaper.

The newspaper story was about an inmate of Her Majesty’s Prison who had escaped custody on Sunday, February 3, almost two months before Renée’s disappearance.

Appearing next to a photo of the escaped inmate, the article described him as a “42-year Vincentian, who walks with a limp, is five feet eight inches tall, and is slimly built.”

    You will never guess where

Six months later, the police found him.

    You will never guess where.

On Saturday, August 10, 1985, The Democrat Newspaper reported that, “He was captured in Antigua on Wednesday and brought back to St. Kitts.”

Police Press and Public Relations Officer, Inspector Cromwell Henry believes that the escaped prisoner must have travelled to Antigua by boat. “Fishing boats traverse our waters every day,” Inspector Henry said.

The case of how the prisoner – who in no way was connected to Renée – made his escape from St. Kitts raises a provocative possibility.

Did Renée disappear into thin air because she too left the island on another fishing boat?

Do you remember who filed the last reported sighting of Renée Farrier?

As reported by The Labour Spokesman Newspaper on Saturday, March 30, 1985, someone told the authorities he saw Renée that Wednesday, five days after she disappeared.

    It was a fisherman.

On The Spot will continue to investigate this story.  Tune in to On The Spot the weekend of July 31 to read about a more recent case that holds our interest.
