OPM responds to media reports of bribing Caribbean politicians

By: Jermine Abel, SKNVibes.com
BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, May. 13.2018 – THE Office of the Prime Minister yesterday responded to an article published by the Daily Mail on Sunday (May 13), which contends that property tycoon Peter Virdee and business partner Dieter Trutschler were bribing Caribbean politicians.

According to the Daily Mail’s report, the revelation which both men have denied came to light during a High Court judgment, where secretly taped telephone calls emerged last week.

The office of Prime Minister, Dr. Timothy Harris in a statement said that it has been made aware of a media article reporting on a judgment of the English High Court.

It was explained that based on “the seriousness of the innuendo in the article that officials from St. Kitts and Nevis had any involvement in this matter, Dr. The Honourable Timothy Harris states emphatically and unequivocally that since Team Unity was elected, the integrity of the Office of the Prime Minister has at all times been maintained to the highest standards to which the citizens and residents of the Federation are entitled to and must hold their Government”.

In fact, the statement pointed out that the judgment references a period of time beginning in 2014, a timeframe Dr. Harris noted, he cannot speak to since he did not assume office until February 18th, 2018.

“Prime Minister Harris confirms that the Team Unity Government has not entered into any agreements with the parties referenced in the article, the statement read.

It continued, “Prime Minister Harris and Team Unity are committed to upholding the rule of law and protecting the reputation of the Federation at the local, regional and international levels. Protecting and serving the interests of the people of St. Kitts and Nevis is the foundation of how Team Unity governs this nation.

According to the Office of the Prime Minister, Dr. Harris has consulted with senior legal counsel in an effort to determine the next steps.

Virdee is currently before the courts on a £43 million fraud charge.
