Lake Health and Wellbeing Launches a Fibroids Survey

By: Lake Health and Wellbeing, Press Release

May 14th, 2018 -- Despite fibroids being very common in women it is rarely spoken about, as it can be a sensitive issue, and it receives little mainstream attention. The result of this is that many women with fibroids may not be receiving the support and information that they need to manage their condition.  Lake Health and Wellbeing is on a mission to change this and is inviting women living in St Kitts and Nevis who have been affected by fibroids to take part in their survey. The survey aims to understand the experience of women in the federation to determine whether help is needed, and based on the results of the survey steps will be taken to address any issues raised.

Fibroids are non-cancerous growths that develop in or around a women’s womb. Fibroids are more common in black women with an estimated 80% of black women being affected. It has also been found that black women are more likely to have more severe symptoms, have multiple fibroids and develop fibroids at a younger age than their white counterparts. It is thought that these differences are due to genetic, lifestyle and environmental factors.

The symptoms of fibroids vary depending on the location of the fibroid in the womb, but the most common symptoms include persistent abdominal pain, heavy and prolonged periods, infertility, anaemia and lower back pain.

Abi Begho from Lake Health and Wellbeing said:

“We want to ensure that women with fibroids have the support and information they need to better manage their situation, so they can achieve the best health possible. We know that many women throughout the world who have fibroids suffer in silence, this should not be the case. Through our survey we want to understand the situation here in St Kitts and Nevis so that we can develop an effective programme that meets the needs of women with fibroids and improves their wellbeing”

If women who have been affected by fibroids and would like to take part in this survey they can email info@lakehealthandwellbeing.com or call 668 1518.
