CARICOM condemns Israel’s action against Palestine

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, May 17, 2018 - THE Caribbean Community (CARICOM) has come out and condemned the violence being used by the Israeli Defense Force against their Palestinian counterparts.

The action followed mass protest by the Palestinians over the United States’ decision to relocate its embassy from Palestine to Jerusalem.

Violence erupted on the border between the two Middle Eastern countries last week, as the United States President, Donald Trump’s daughter, Ivanka Trump opened the new embassy.

According to media reports from the Middle East, the violence has seen Israeli forces killing at least 50 people.

In condemning the use of force by the Israel Defence Force, which fired on largely unarmed Palestinians protesting along the Gaza-Israel border, the Community stated that it has followed “with increasing alarm the mounting toll of fatalities and injured among the demonstrators”.

The clashes saw mostly boys and girls being killed and 1700 wounded during the clashes.

“In the midst of these troubling developments, the Caribbean Community calls for restraint in the use of force and for a halt to this unacceptable escalation of death and violence. The Community reiterates its position that the Israel-Palestine conflict can only be resolved by peaceful means and reaffirms its support for a two-state solution with the people of Israel and Palestine living in independent countries within secure and international recognised borders in accordance with the relevant United Nations Security Council (UNSC) Resolutions.”

The move by the United States has prompted a similar position taken by Latin American states to relocate their embassies within the region.
