Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine Announces Inaugural Alumni Awards

    Recipients represent leadership and excellence in veterinary medicine

     

    BASSETERRE, St. Kitts. – May 19, 2018 – Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine (RUSVM) today announced the recipients of its alumni awards, two of which are posthumous. Awards were presented at the RUSVM commencement ceremony. This is the first year the awards have been conveyed.

    There are three different award categories: Distinguished Alumni Achievement, Rising Star, and Distinguished Service/Research. Recipients were selected based on their extraordinary contributions to veterinary medicine.

    "The RUSVM Alumni Association is pleased to honor some of our finest graduates," said Dr. Sean Callanan, dean at RUSVM. "I want to congratulate each of our award recipients. We are so proud of them for all they have accomplished. The awardees represent leadership in the larger veterinary community and profession, and their success inspires our current students and the entire RUSVM alumni family.”

    The 2018 RUSVM Alumni Awards recipients are:

    The Distinguished Alumni Achievement Award recognizes the success of those who have made significant contributions to the profession while embodying the University’s purpose, vision and values.

        •   Dr. Lisa Newell, originally from Southern California, graduated from RUSVM in 1997. Former California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger appointed her to California’s Veterinary Medical Board (VMB) in 2005 and she served on the state’s VMB until 2009. Dr. Newell serves as on the board of directors for the California Wildlife Center, a non-profit organization that rescues, rehabilitates and releases wild animals. She is also involved in multiple charities, working towards improving the lives of animals and children.

           •    Dr. Mike Ramieri, originally from Manhattan, New York, graduated from RUSVM in 2002. He opened his own 24-hour veterinary hospital, Advanced Veterinary Care in Franklin, New Jersey. While vacationing in Mexico with his family in early 2018, Dr. Ramieri became ill and passed away a few days after returning home, surrounded by his loving family.

         •     Dr. Mike Zareski, originally from Rolling Hill Estates, California, graduated from RUSVM in 2002. As a veterinarian, he devoted his professional life to caring for each dog, cat, lizard, bird or goat as if it were his own. His vision for the Western Veterinary Group, which he owned, began with a house-call practice out of the back of his Toyota Tacoma. Later, he bought Animal Birth Control in Lomita, renamed it and grew it into a full-service veterinary hospital. He eventually moved the clinic to Torrance. Tragically, Dr. Zareski died in December 2017. His practice continues, and celebrated its10-year anniversary in April 2018. 

    Rising Star Award
    This award recognizes a recent alum who has experienced an accelerated career progression with a nationally recognized organization and exhibited excellence in their practice – supporting clinical, diagnostic, public health, and/or military service. 

           •   Dr. Krista Keller, originally from Biddeford, ME, graduated from RUSVM in 2010. In 2014, she became the first RUSVM graduate to achieve board certification in the American College of Zoological Medicine. Currently, Dr. Keller is working as an assistant professor at the College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Illinois, Champaign. Dr. Keller hopes to inspire future veterinarians to practice high quality medicine on all species. She attributes her success to the training and mentorship that she received at RUSVM.

    Distinguished Service/Research Award
    This award recognizes an alum who has demonstrated meritorious service to the profession of veterinary medicine through personal activities, service to the veterinary community, and research within the veterinary field or professional accomplishments. 

           •   Dr. Kimberly Michelle Stewart, originally from Statesboro, GA, graduated from RUSVM in 2006. She is currently working as an assistant professor of Special Species at RUSVM, Dr. Stewart is also the founder and director of the St. Kitts Sea Turtle Monitoring Network (SKSTMN), based in St. Kitts and Nevis. The organization focuses on the management and health of nesting and foraging populations of leatherback, hawksbill, and green sea turtle populations in St. Kitts.

    The RUSVM Alumni Association solicits nominations from all members of the university and alumni community. The Alumni Association Awards committee reviews all nominations and selects the recipients. The selection process is confidential and nominations are accepted year-round.
