Democratic Labour Party not confident of winning election

By: Staff Reporter, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, May 24.2018 – IT IS polling day in Barbados and with just a few hours to go before the island learns which party won the majority of seats, the Democratic Labour Party (DLP) has chosen to keep its party’s confidence of winning today’s election confidential.

SKNVibes spoke with the political party’s campaign manager Ambassador Robert Morris who said that he does not believe that the leaking of their manifesto before they were able to present it to the public would have an impact on the people going into the polls.

He added that there is the possibility, however, that such an act might impact the people’s perception of the ones who leaked it, noting that Barbados’ incumbent Prime Minister, Freundel Stuart, would never do anything of that sort.

With regards to the sewage issue on the South Coast, Morris said that the issue is one that they inherited from the previous administration and will take time to be resolved.

“That plant on the South Coast was designed and instituted by them [previous government], with all of its flaws,” he said.

Morris assured that the issue is being looked at and will be resolved but stressed that all of the complaints were antics to try to dissuade the public from rallying with the DLP.

He added that the major issues that needed to be discussed were the economy and education among other areas.

“The big issues are the economy. Tourism, that will fluctuate, we now have it at a place where it has to go. Education, we are transforming it. These are what we consider to be the important issues,” he explained.

He continued: “They kept the same old lives [pillars] of the economy. We have three new lives [pillars]; the cultural industry, including sports. We are looking at green economy for Barbados…soon you will be hearing about wind farm and all of those different variations to make sure that we don’t depend alone on fossil fuel, that is a big big business. The third thing is that we are setting up medical universities in Barbados.”

The Campaign Manager explained that when the incumbent government is looking to have several medical universities established in Barbados which would bring in revenue to such that the country would not have to be highly dependent on one area of revenue.

He went on to state that the DLP has been questioning the leadership of their rival political party, the Barbados Labour Party (BLP), noting that they have raised several questions about the party’s leadership and have not been successful in receiving answers.

Morris told this media house that the BLP are reactive and not substantial to sustain the economy or move it forward.

There were no reports of any incidents surrounding the election but long lines were recorded as being seen at the various polling stations.
