Cayon, Conaree, Village and St. Pauls for Final Four 2017/2018

By: Andre Huie, Press Release

May 28th, 2018 -- The results are in and the four teams for the SKNFA National bank Premier League final four playoffs for 2018 have been determined. The teams that have made it in the final four are, in order of ranking: Rams Village Superstars, Flow 4G Cayon Rockets, SOL IAS Conaree F.C. and S.L. Horsfords St. Pauls F.C. After scraping through with a 1-0 win against Fast Cash Saddlers United on Saturday in their final match of the regular season, back to back defending champions Flow 4G Cayon Rockets are in the Final Four to defend their title for a second time. Kevin Benjamin netted the most important goal for Cayon this season with a 62nd minute strike.

Cayon needed to win that match to make it through and were expected to do so as Saddlers had already secured Premier League football for another season and this was not a must win encounter for them. Also on Saturday, a team that needed to confirm their spot was another back to back champion a few years ago, S.L. Horsfords St. Pauls. Needing a win or a draw to book their spot, St. Pauls went down 1-0 to MAP Newtown United F.C. in their final match of the regular season. Tijhaun Isaac scored the goal for Newtown in the 37th min.

If St. Pauls had lost by a three goal margin, Hobson Enterprises Garden Hotspurs, who were in waiting in the wings, would have booked their playoff spot, but the 1-0 margin was enough to see St. Pauls through. Coach Austin Huggins of St. Pauls said his team, though they lost were keeping their eyes on the start of the playoffs. “The intention was to get the maximum three points. We saw the outcome of the game. It seems the players were not up to the task. I guess it’s because we have some niggling injuries. Hopefully they will be as fit as we expect them to be for the final four,” Coach Huggins said.

“It was a rough season; a rough three rounds…as a team I think we had a successful season. Today would have been the third game we lost for the season,” he added. Coach Huggins noted that the mentality of his team will be key for the final four playoffs as the team that keeps their concentration, will ultimately succeed.

Yusuf Saunders of Newtown, assessed his team’s performance after playing their final match of the season. “The three points were important because the fans, throughout the season, we tend to disappoint them a bit too much so we wanted to show them that all the support they have given us throughout this season, was not for nothing,” he  said.

Now that the regular season has ended, the final four playoffs officially begin on Saturday June 2 starting at 6pm.
